KEY WEST, Florida Keys — Greg Vincent of Grand Bahama Island caught seven permit on fly to win the 2009 Del Brown Invitational Permit Tournament honoring the late angling legend.
Vincent earned the title of Grand Champion Angler fishing with Captain Justin Rea of Sugarloaf, FL. Rea was named the tournament’s Grand Champion Guide. Greg and Justin won stainless steel sculptures by Roger Fowler.
Vincent’s permit ranged from 18 inches to 30 inches for a total of 166.25 inches worth 1000 points. Their 30 inch permit was also the tournament’s largest permit. Greg and Justin won original water colors by Jorge Martinez.
Mike Allen, of Key West, FL caught six permit for a total of 137.65 inches worth 900 points to earn the title of Runner-up Grand Champion. He was guided by Captain Will Benson of Key West, FL. Mike and Will won photographs taken by Del provided by the family of Del Brown.
Scott Crippen of Port Saint Lucie, FL was named the First Runner-up Angler with four permit for a total of 75.5 inches worth 500 points. He fished with Captain Geoff Quatraro of Fort Pierce, FL. Scott was also best new angler ,Scott and Geoff each won a Tibor Reels and Redington Fly Rods.
Terrific weather and tide conditions made the permit fly fishing great for the three days of the event out of Hurricane Hole Marina and the Doubletree fantastic! Anglers on 16 boats caught a tournament record of 27 permit during the event named for Brown. The internationally acclaimed angler, who died in 2003, caught more than 500 permit during his lifetime.
