Ned Johnson of Charleston, SC guided by Islamorada's own Capt. Tim Klein defeated a field of 20 superb bonefish fly anglers and guides in the 2009 Keys Spring Invitational Bonefish Fly Tournament. This gives Klein and Johnson back to back wins in one of the toughest tournaments in the Florida Keys.
The all release tournament recognizes bonefish of 8 or more pounds for points on an increasing scale per ounce emphasizing larger fish. Fish released under 8 pounds can add to the score not to exceed the weight fish points. Bonefish are weighed and released alive for additional bonus points.
IGFA flyrod bonefish world record holder Michael Swerdlow fishing with Capt Ted Christie started Wednesday off with a monster 13 pound 1 ounce bonefish. Klein and Johnson weighed and released an 8.2. One other weight fish and 16 releases were also turned in.
On Thursday, Klein and Johnson turned in an even 8.12 pound fish and 9 releases to take the lead. There were 7 weight fish and 32 releases for the day.
Klein and Johnson weighed in a 10.4 to clinch the deal on Friday when a total of 4 weight fish and 6 releases were entered.
In three days of excellent fishing 20 anglers landed 14 fish over 8 pounds including 6 over 10 pounds. They released an additional 54 bonefish under 8 pounds.
